Making the transition from solicitor to principal or partner of a law practice requires greater skills and understanding of the business of managing a legal practice. 

This course is designed to provide you with everything you need and is accredited by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia for the purposes of obtaining a Principal Practising Certificate. The course is approved PMC and by satisfactorily completing the course, you will be issued with a PMC Statement for Western Australia.

Course Outline

At the end of this course you will:

  • understand the dynamics of current legal practice
  • develop a detailed business plan that will be a blueprint for your practice
  • apply professional responsibility and ethical practice requirements
  • understand the financial mechanics of your practice
  • manage legal practice risk and avoid negligence
  • learn marketing and business development strategies
  • implement effective people management techniques
  • learn about trust money, trust accounts and setting up a trust account
  • understand how to better manage and supervise staff, and
  • understand stress and how to balance personal and professional objectives.

The course covers the following 9 key areas:

Module 1: Trust accounting Module 6: Business development and marketing
Module 2: Financial management Module 7: Leadership, management and self-management
Module 3: Risk management and professional standards Module 8: Ethics
Module 4: Practice management and workflow systems Module 9: Innovation and legal technology
Module 5: Business planning

Online component

You will have access to your online materials from one week prior to the Orientation Date. These online materials contain pre-reading (approximately 15-20 hours). They also contain compulsory exercises that must be completed prior to the course workshop completion of the course and to obtain your PMC Statement.



There are three areas of assessment as indicated in the table below. The Trust and Office Accounting exam and Part A and Part B (together) must be passed.

On successful completion of the LPMC, you can claim up to 10 CPD units.

The program covers the mandatory requirements of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Practice Management and Business Skills, Professional Skills and Substantive Law.
