Legal Practice Management – Victoria May ‘25

The course is developed and run by leaders who manage legal businesses. They will help bridge the gap between theory and real-world experience so you can broaden practical skills that are immediately applicable to your business.

The course is assessed as compliant with the Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner Practice Management Course Guidelines for Victoria dated October 2017 and clause 5.3 of the Grant of a Principal Practising Certificate Policy.

Course Outline

The Legal Practice Management Course has three components:

  • Online learning:
    You will be given access to the College Learning Portal from the course start date where you will access materials which will assist you to satisfactorily complete the assessments and course.

    You can access your materials at anytime, anywhere and on any device.

  • 3-day workshop:
    The second of the three components is a 3-day online group workshop held over Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

    The workshop is both an opportunity for you to engage in practical exercises and tutorials with legal industry experts and it is a great chance to network and connect with peers within the profession.
  • Assessments:

    We want you to finish the course with the knowledge and skills to; be a competent and successful practice manager and, to obtain your principal practising certificate. During the workshops you will be given access to assessments in:
  • Ethics
  • Trust Accounting,
    and, after the workshops you will be asked to submit a business plan for which the templates will be provided. It is a VLSB requirement that all assessments are completed (including the business plan) within 6 months of the last day of the workshop.

This course is not an approved CPD activity for Western Australian practitioners.

If you hold a practising certificate in a state or territory other than Western Australia and this educational activity extends your knowledge and skills in areas that are relevant to your practice needs or professional development, then you should claim one (1) "unit” for each hour of attendance, refreshment breaks not included. The annual requirement is ten (10) CPD units each year from 1 April to 31 March. Some practitioners, such as accredited specialists are required to complete more than ten (10) units each CPD year.

The program covers the mandatory requirements of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Practice Management and Business Skills, Professional Skills and Substantive Law.
